i believe there is a new brothel that is opening in levenshulme in 2 weeks time. they're just waiting on their late entertainment licence. a (defined) nightclub in prague and the nightclub that is opening, golden prague (was formerly the wheatsheaf), are one & the same thing-a brothel! they're trying to open a sex establishment on the a6 in an ex public house. the way they're trying to get around the law is by obtaining a late entertainment licence, having a nightclub downstairs with dancers (prostitutes)&then the men can take them upstairs (private members club-only men?) to the old hotel rooms & pay for sex (or getting round the no money changing hands another way). after having been in there it seems not really czech/slovakian/polish but has clientele who are more like serbian/romanian/albanian, & the locals. the few key members of staff are probably czech/slovakian but the rest involved are not. is there anything that can be done now rather than after the fact? isnt having jackies (rear entrance!)& the rest bad enough? bringing prostitution into a public house on an busy a-road from manchester-stockport, ie making it part of accepted society is disgusting & will not do our children any favours. trying to get around english laws&taking the residents for fools is not acceptable! dont get me wrong i am sure a lot of the men would love it-they should stick to sneaking out of sleezy shop doorsways or go back on holiday to thailand/the dam etc. isnt our current society bad enough with the gangsters and the wannabe gangsters? - if something isnt done to stop this going ahead we will probably have albania/serbian gypsy gangsters and czech/albanian etc prostitutes versus the levenshulme trouble-makers - and ironically we will then be backing the gangsters hahahahaha! how ironic! not 100% but this needs to be looked into sooner rather than later. does anyone care about the place they live in? - a concerned resident

Like me, I'm sure a number of you have recently received a pack from the Council asking for views about the proposed congestion charging.
I would be interested to hear people's views on this - here are some extracts from the response I have sent to GMPTE: Safeguards for prices Having read all of the information you have publicly available, I can see no guarantee that the prices for congestion will remain the same for any length of time. I understand that this would be a difficult commitment to make, but I'm afraid I cannot support any scheme where I cannot know that a fair price for the charge will be guaranteed. One of the main selling points for these plans is that the "[the] average daily charge is estimated to be less than £3" (taken from the gm future transport website), yet there is nothing to say how long this will last for. There is nothing to say that this will remain only at peak times and won't be introduced for Bank Holidays once it has already been introduced. The London congestion charge was introduced at a low price and was quickly hiked up once people had learnt to live with it. Now it is at the whim of politicians who use it to buy votes with different pressure groups. This is a bleak state of affairs and not one I would want to see in Manchester.

Hi, Just been to the Sure Start family day in Broom Avenue...was a really good day for the kids I was shocked to read the 'Smell A Rat' attachment on the FOL website as it's basically political propaganda...I thought FOL wasn't meant to be affiliated to any political parties, I get the sense that it's been used as a tool by Left List (the local candidate also posted info and attachment)
I don't feel happy about this group using the title FOL, it seems misleading. Sorry, I'm a little bit incensed but it opens up great ground for debate over political parties involvement in FOL.

What about beer?
M19 and the Bluebell do not sell real ale, infact, apart from the sidings, you'll be pushed to find a decent pint in levenshulme. Can we not ask the publicans to sell real ale in an aid to reinvigorate the night life in levenshulme? as Samuel Taylor Coleridge once wrote: water water everywhere but not a drop to drink.

There's a new book comng out abour Guerrilla Gardening and the new Urban Gardens Exhibition is really good.
Here's the link for the Guerrillagardening activists website: http://www.guerrillagardening.org/ Lots of great tips etc and before/after pictures. Is there any more gardening sessions planned? There's a lot of derelict land around that could do with a spot of gardening!!!

Hello, Just wanted to post a message about a few concerns on Chapel Street.. There have been issues with the Industrial premises illegally burning waste for some time. They are aware that this offense warrants a large fine and seem to do it either in the evenings or at the weekend when the councils environmental pollution department is closed. This is an issue as they are burning all sorts of toxic waste and this is a residential area.
Also, the derelict 'Fitlock' industrial premises on Chapel Street has been suffering from flytipping and is a complete eyesore. Does anyone know what needs to be done for the council to clean this place up? Does the council have an agenda for letting the area slide into disrepair?

I emailed richard leese quite independently of the FoL about our local baths. I visited there a couple of months ago for the first time in ages, and was shocked by the level of deterioration that had occured. (No working showers, no clock, no stereo to accompany the areobics session, boarded up cubicles and incredibly run down decor). I've still to receive so much as an acknowledgement of my concerns.

Start Rant:
Justine Hall - "I'm a PHD student over at the university, so I don't actually live in Levenshulme..." She goes on to say she lives in the city centre as she needs to be near her studies but will 'definitely' move to Levenshulme if she gets elected. This is a complete insult and a joke....I know many students who live in Levenshulme, undergraduate and post-graduate...I don't imagine any of them would want to pay the expensive rents in the city centre, to be 'near' their studies....what a ridiculous excuse for not living in Levenshulme. It sounds like she wants to use Levenshulme as a guinea pig experiment to make her CV look good. Fancy having a play with politics do we Justine Hall? Do you even know where Levenshulme is? I bet you got a taxi to Cedar Mount and kept the meter running while you had your 15 minutes of local politic fame before sitting around with your friends drinking over priced coffee and regaling them with stories of how 'awful' and 'rough' this part of Manchester looked. Surely the Green Party can field more 'Sincere' candidates than this.........

Does Levenshulme really need a supermarket?
Kwiksave/Somerfield weren't exactly inundated with shoppers were they? I like the fact that we have a great little grocers near Albert Road, (it used to be called Murphy's) which unlike it's predecessor stays open until well after 4pm and has a friendly atmosphere. Johnsons butchers is extremely handy and let's not forget Levenshulme Village Stores near the library/swimming baths. We're missing a decent bakery although Martins do a decent oat loaf. I love the fact that there's some decent newsagents around here too. I fear that if a supermarket does arrive in Levenshulme it will cannibalise the area (Tesco) or make it look more down at heel (Farmfoods/Iceland/Cooltrader etc) The area will start to lose it's identity and the little shops that make up the community will start to disappear.

Has anyone experienced any suspicious looking characters prowling around recently?
There have been attempted break-ins around the Cromwell Grove area (particularly the areas where there's no alley way gating) I have seen one dodgy looking character going down alleyways and along the Cromwell Grove area with a childs buggy that he's using to put bits of scrap into. He's scruffy, in his early twenties, with short hair that looks like its been partially dyed blonde. There's also a guy who wears a very bright red coat, short dark hair and sometimes wears a hat. He was reported to the police after been seen breaking into a house that was being renovated on Cromwell Grove and stealing the boiler. There are plenty of opportunistic thieves in the area so please remain vigilant, make sure you lock doors properly (particularly car doors). The area around Cardus street is notorious for cars being broken into. Does anyone know of any Neighbourhood Watch schemes in the area?

The area around Chapel Street and Cromwell Grove is now a 20 mph zone with speed bumps. However, I don't see that much of a change, if anything it's more dangerous as cars are now driving onto the pavement to avoid the road bumps.
What the council needs to do is put up speed camera signs (even if there are no signs) or even use real speed cameras or cctv cameras. Otherwise why impose a speeding limit if there is nothing to back it up?

Good to see the baths getting in the news...
http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/1043430_outrage_over_naked_swimming Surely toxic waste, industrial fires and the irresponsible ownership of dangerous dogs in the area, along with dog mess and broken glass in the local childrens play areas along with a general lack of community facilities should be more of a concern for these parents than complaining about who privately books the swimming pool? The year is 2008 right?
