Responses to Consultation
The Council have invited formal responses to the South Manchester Regeneration Plan by end April.
It is important that as many individuals and groups of all kinds reply formally to this consultation, for our views to have the maximum effect.
Please post copies of any formal responses from anyone to the South Manchester Regeneration Plan in this series of pages..
Items posted here may also be used by others who either want to endorse them, or use them a a basis for their own responses.
What to write?
What items to raise
This has got to be your decision. You must not just copy someone else's words.
Some of the things you might want to raise are:
How to write it
Don't just write it, and send it off immediately. Make a draft copy, and ask other people to suggest ways of improving it. You'll probably find lots of ways to improve it yourself whenyou reread it after a day or two.
Lastly: have a look at the example below, and the other examples on this website. You don't have to agree with everything they say, but they'll give you an idea how to write your proposals.
Example From the Bristol and Gloucester Ave Resident's Association.
As residents of Levenshulme we welcome the importance that the plan places on social and community facilities, employment, shopping facilities and the environment. We are however disappointed that no concrete proposals were put forward at the meeting at St Peter's.
Our Aims
We seek a renewed Levenshulme built on
Whilst we accept that redevelopment of the St Mary's area depends on developers being found, and that the council cannot force the provision of a new supermarket, we do propose that in the short term steps be taken to improve the image of the area and to preclude developments harmful to the character of the area:

What to write?
- It's important that we all write our own letters. If we all send in the same letter it may be counted as just one letter.
- It's important that we only ask the council to do (or not do) things that are within their power. For example they can't force Quiksave to reopen their store, but they can do do things to encourage other people to look at opening a new supermarket.
- It's important that we are constructive and polite, and also that we don't let it become a party political issue, though you can point out items agreed as council policy which have not been implemented.
What items to raise
This has got to be your decision. You must not just copy someone else's words.
Some of the things you might want to raise are:
- Improved East-West public transport
- Regular, all day bus services to Didsbury, Chorlton and Old Trafford
- Direct train to the airport
- Modernised train station with disabled access
- Enforcement of anti-litter legislation
- Investment in social projects for young people, e.g. a youth club
- A community centre
- Improved road surfaces
- Traffic calming scheme on Gordon Ave, & junction of Broom Ave/Broom Lane/Crayfield
- Financial incentives and support for encouraging local business and shops
- provision of a market like Gorton market
- Adequate maintenance of swimming pool/leisure centre & library
- Keep Arcadia open and renovate
- Clear the deserted land around St Mary’s
- Bins for residential roads, such as Delamere Road
- The importance of involving the whole of Levenshulme, including the parts of Levenshulme in South Gorton ward.
- Parking and traffic calming in the residential streets
- Policing, crime and safe streets

Comments on South Manchester Regeneration
Our Response As residents of Levenshulme we welcome the importance that the plan places on social and community facilities, employment, shopping facilities and the environment. We are however disappointed that no concrete proposals were put forward at the meeting at St Peter's.
Our Aims
We seek a renewed Levenshulme built on
- improved community facilities for all ages.
- improved shopping facilities (supermarket and a lively community of other shops)
- encouraging startup of new local businesses and welcoming existing employers from elsewhere.
- We are concerned at the lack of plans to replace the community centre. We support the request made to council officers to put forward proposals to replace the community centre. We request to be informed of the council officers' proposals on this matter.
- We would not oppose the building of a new library and swimming pool, but we would not wish the provision of a new community centre to be delayed because of this.
- We are concerned at the growth of restaurant facilities, which adversely impact the area in parking nuisance and noise nuisance.
- We are concerned that the artificial border divides Levenshulme into Levenshulme Ward and Gorton South Ward. Many of the existing "Levenshulme" facilities are actually outside the area covered by the plan. We call for the inclusion in the regeneration plan of that part of Gorton South considered by its residents to be part of Levenshulme community.
Whilst we accept that redevelopment of the St Mary's area depends on developers being found, and that the council cannot force the provision of a new supermarket, we do propose that in the short term steps be taken to improve the image of the area and to preclude developments harmful to the character of the area:
- We propose that the A6 be designated a community shopping centre, providing facilities for the local people. Further development of large banquetting suites should be regarded as inappropriate for this purpose. Clear planning guidelines should discourage inappropriate planning proposals before they are made, and provide a clear signal to organizations considering new locations for appropriate building.
- We propose that the area from St Mary's northwards to Chapel Street be designated for office and light commercial use, whilst still taking into account the residential nature of the neighbourhood. A certain amount of this already exists in the old bakery on Alexandra Terrace and this should be integrated into new developments. This will provide local employment and also help reduce congestion and carbon usage for rush hour travelling to work.
- We propose that in the short term the council use such powers as it has to tidy up the St Mary's area and provide some minimal form of landscaping, both to reduce risk of injury, and to minimise the bad effect the bombsite effect has on the neighbourhood's image.
- We propose that the council officers be asked to produce a public report on the options available for a replacement community centre.
- We propose that the council officers be asked to produce a public report specifying what incentives might lawfully be offered to encourage businesses to move into the area.
- We propose that the council officers be asked to produce a public report on what steps might be taken to encourage and support local people wishing to set up their own businesses.
- Direct response to the Levenshulme Community Association, the Levenshulme ward service co-ordination group, the secretaries of the local Residents associations.
- Documents made available on the Web.

Watch
Chapel Street has to be the worst street in Levenshulme in terms of filth and urban degredation. Never mind the 'bomb site' near ST Mary's, what about the nuclear holocaust that is the old Mill on Chapel street. This is a popular attraction for fly tippers and drug addicts. Please include this in your report as many people pass this abomination to and from work everyday. A depressing sight to start any working day.
