I just wanted to make everyone aware that they are proposing to close Barlow Road Post Office branch on a permanent basis. Please give your support by signing the petition which is held in the shop and voicing any objections to consultation@postoffice.co.uk. The consultation deadline is 21st july. What about beer?
M19 and the Bluebell do not sell real ale, infact, apart from the sidings, you'll be pushed to find a decent pint in levenshulme. Can we not ask the publicans to sell real ale in an aid to reinvigorate the night life in levenshulme? as Samuel Taylor Coleridge once wrote: water water everywhere but not a drop to drink.

Just want to make everyone aware of the huge scam involving extra warranties on electrical goods, especially in the run up towards Christmas. I only found this out last week but if you have bought anything first-hand, if it breaks down due to a manufacturing issue, i.e you didn't do it yourself you can either get the shop to repair it FREE OF CHARGE or you can claim a FREE LIKE-FOR-LIKE REPLACEMENT. This is all backed by consumer direct. Anything you buy is guaranteed for SIX YEARS regardless of whether or not you bought a Guarantee.
BASICALLY DO NOT BUY EXTRA GUARANTEES YOU DO NOT NEED THEM!!! Under the Sale of Goods act 1979 you have the right to free repair or replacement. I have just put this into practice, my Nan bought an electric fire from a well known catalogue company, it broke down after having it 18 months, she was told that because it was out of the 12 month guarantee she was not entitled to ANYTHING. THIS IS NOT TRUE. I rang on behalf of my Grandmother, quoted the Sale of Goods Act and lo and behold, I spoke to them tonight to which they stated that they had 'spoken to their legal department and they would replace the fire'. If I can do this so can you! Refuse to be ripped off!! Lets get the power back in to the hands of the consumers!! Pass it on people!! I

Is there a Rushford Park Residents Assoc? There is one mentioned on the links section but emailing the contact given doesn't produce a response... if anyone knows anything I would be interested.
Also I would be interested if the more active parts of Levenshulme [maybe I mean the geographically more active parts of the FOL] consider Rushford Park as a part of 'Levenshulme' [leaving aside we are in the same ward, etc.]... I can imagine arguments on both sides... Leopold

Hello everyone, I do live in Levenshulme too and I am completely behind a lot of the work that the friends of Levenshulme do. However, from the comments on this page and also the posters that have been produced there seemd to be a conflict in aims and objectives to some extent. Where the person I'm replying to wishes for there to be more independent groceries the main group are campaigning for a supermarket! If things are going to be achieved in our area we need to be singing from the same hyme sheet! Is it independent shops we want or a supermarket? Also a council can not just make a supermarket move into the area. Investors need to see that people are spending money in the area. Currently most people are traveling out of the area to supermarkets instead of using the smaller shops in levenshulme. What incentive does this give a supermarket to relocate in the area if everyone is travelling out to established supermarkets and they do not have to spend more money. If we limited the use to local supermarkets and therefore they lose profits they will consider moving into the area. If we don't want a supermarket then people have to support their local shops more!

Hello everyone, I am a new member but have lived in Levenshulme for about 6 years. I agree with Anonymous' suggestion of Greenbank Park being registered as a village green. It is important to retain as much open space as possible, and equally vital for the space to be acknowledged and included in maps and plans. I am a member of Friends of Highfield Park, some 70 acres of parkland in Levenshulme, bordered by Cringle Road, Nelstrop Road and the Fallowfield Loop. It is, in my opinion, a very natural and beautiful place to have in a inner city location, yet it does not register on maps, nor is it recognised by A-Z searches on the internet. After much communication and effort by the Friends of HP and other community groups, the area was finally added to the police computer this year (we have a perennial issue with young men and motorbikes ..) There is now a possibility that the area could be turned into a Local Nature Reserve, with educational possibilities etc (so maybe more grants etc?), I'll let you know, but if you're passing the park, do walk in and have a look, it's pretty good.
Please would someone tell me the date and location of the next meeting? Thanks.

I don't know how long Greenbank Park has been in use, but if it has been used as a public space for the last 20 years there is scope for it to be registered as a village green, thereby ensuring that development can be declared illegal in perpetuity. Anyone can apply to have a piece of land registered, it is a quick easy and cheap process and can sometimes be used as a tactic to defeat development even after planning permission has been granted. I would urge the 'Save Our Park' campaign to examine this as a potential option in the fight to retain our greenspace.

I think they need to do something with the park, at the moment it is little more than a drinking den for the young. Not least because there are kids just hanging around outside the house with little or nothing to do.
Everyone complains there are not enough facilities: Levenshlume has been forgotton as the last area of south manchester for regeneration, give us back our community center, etc However, as soon as something positive begins to happen petitions are sent out to stop it with, what would appear to be no alternative suggestions being put forward. Green Bank Fields is more than adequate to support a couple of pitches, at least two tennis courts and a play area for kids, and still have room to walk the dog. However, I would say, if this is a private venture and the pitches are to be used for the sole purpose of a private club then that is just not acceptable. If it is planned for everyone then i suggest the development should be limited to two pitches and include some tennis courts in one corner ( 4 would be good) and a climbing frame and swings for the kids in another corner. That in my mind is what we should be striving for. Levenshulme is on the up, there is no doubt about, and these are the steps necessary if it is ever to be considered in the same breath as chorlton and didsbury.

Only 12 people have objected according to Stuart Calton and the deadline is Wednesday 30th May to object.
I hope Stuart Calton and Paul Seadby don't mind if I paste their email in here... DEVELOPMENT OF GREEN BANK FIELDS A planning application has been submitted to Manchester City Council from Dappa Homes to build football pitches on Green Bank Fields - the recreation ground between Manor Road and Barlow Road (green area opposite the Blue Bell Inn). The Developer Dappa Homes is building 149 houses on the GMPTE Playing Fields on Mount Road, opposite Gorton Mount School. The developer is obliged to replace the playing fields and facilities and has therefore submitted an application to build 3 football pitches, a new clubhouse including changing and social facilities on Green Bank Fields and enclose the site with a 3m high fence. An informal meeting was held on 24 May where local residents discussed the plans. A number of issues were raised including: · Converting open-access green space to an enclosed privately-owned sports facility · Building on public green space · Loss of dog-walking and other informal recreation opportunities · Visual intrusion of the buildings and fencing · Loss of mature trees across the site · Loss of informal access to Green Bank Fields from adjoining streets · Closure of the current rights of way through the park · Noise from regular football games affecting local residents · Parking affecting local residents · And many, many more...

I'm glad to see that Levyites are active in petitioning the council for regeneration but very concerned that the reported request to get one of the supermarket giants to take over the Kwik Save site may lead to real damage being done to the other shops that attract me to come down from Longsight.
You should be very wary of Tesco moving in with their "every little helps" slogan- look at what has happened around the Burnage Tesco or the problems people have in other areas where ASDA have swamped out local shops- reducing choice and variety to say nothing of the international effects of these businesses expanding. Tesco and ASDA make fantastic profits and that money will not get recycled in Levenshulme in the same way that buying your paper from the newsagent or your sausages from the butchers will. So beware- you might find a nice big bright shop- but then you will also find more boarded up. And when it comes to supposed cheaper prices, look at the prices you pay at the so called "convenience" shops of these shops. To find out more look at http://www.asdawatch.org/ and www.tescopoly.org.uk. Steph. Pennells

In support of the previous comment, I have not signed the petition because of the fact that so many people seem to want a major chain supermarket in Levenshulme.
This is the last thing we need. When is comes to retail what we REALLY need is; 1. A locally run, owned and managed co-operative small supermarket that sells local (ie North West) produce at sensible, competitve prices. Somewhere that we can buy all the things we can't get from the other local shops. 2. A good fishmonger, and perhaps an improvment at our butchers (ie more freerange/organic meat). 3. A market, perhaps only monthly, that can attract all the best suppliers from all over the country, specialsing in good farm produce and 2nd hand stalls. 4. A good local bakery, in order to shake up the Martins monopoly. Chain stores do not support local communities, they kill them.

It is encouraging to see people taking the initiative and acting positively, let's hope that Manchester City Council can live up to this. Of course I expect to be diappointed by them, but live in hope that MCC will one day act to benefit the PEOPLE of Manchester and not just it's commercial interests.

I dont really go out much at night in Levenshulme, but driving home or coming back on the 192 from town, I have noticed an increasingly tense atmosphere, with large gangs of kids out and about on the street. Not a problem in itself I guess, but I saw someone chucking a stone at a bus and also heard about people getting stabbed and shootings recently. I've lived here for 18 years and I know there have always been some issues with young people gathering and being naughty - but does anyone else think its getting more sinister? Could it be that the worst elements of Longsight, Hulme etc have been pushed out by the regen of those areas and are now settling in Levvie? - where will they go from here? Wilmslow? It dosn't help that our police station closed a few years ago. I am going to write to the Regen Team about it in my letter. Good Luck with the campaigning everyone and thanks to Wet Paint for this breath of fresh air in Levenshulme politics. BeggarsBelief

it was great to see that so many people care about Levenshulme's future and the fact that so many turned up to the protest - and meeting - should make the council realise we are not going to just let this 'strategic plan' happen without a fight.
The point has been made - although rather raucously - that we will not let their impositions wash over us. However meetings like this sadly get nowhere. A strong chair is needed and a stricter Q and A session too to avoid repeated questions, improve responses and stop it descending into mob rule. There also needs to be an official taking minutes so that anything not answered is sorted. The council SHOULD already know this but if not we will have to do it ourselves. Having enthusiasm for our area is not enough. We need to be organised at meetings to ensure results and I also agree that letters to the council are a good idea too. Finally a meeting -with the right framework - should also be organised so we can create a wish list for the area to hand to regeneration staff once agreed by neighbourhood groups.
